SUMMARY:Histamine Sensitivity and MCA's by Adele Pelteret
DESCRIPTION:INTEGRATIVE AND NATUROPATHIC APPROACHES TO HISTAMINE SENSITIVITY AND MCAS\nby Drs. Adele Pelteret\, BSc Comp Health Sciences\, BSc Naturopathy\, Erika Drewes\, Specialist Family Physician\, Marna Turner\, MBChB\, DipPEC(SA)\, Nicola Buchan\, MBChB. \nSummary:\nHistamine sensitivity is a key feature of MCAS\, a condition where mast cells release too many chemical mediators\, including histamine\, in response to triggers. Unlike histamine intolerance\, which is a reduced ability to break down dietary histamine\, MCAS involves the overactivation of mast cells themselves\, leading to a broader range of symptoms caused by the release of histamine and other substances like leukotrienes and prostaglandins. \nPeople with MCAS can experience a wide variety of symptoms affecting multiple body systems\, which may be worsened by histamine-rich foods\, but also by stress\, temperature changes\, and certain medications. \nBiographies:\nDr. Marna Turner \nDr. Marna Turner brings a wealth of experience to the table as a seasoned medical professional with extensive expertise in treating vector-borne infections. Her journey into specializing in these diseases is deeply personal\, stemming from her own experience as a patient failed by our current healthcare system. \nThis firsthand encounter ignited her passion and commitment to understanding and addressing these often misunderstood illnesses. As a member of both ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society) and SASIM (South African Society of Integrative Medicine)\, Dr. Turner is deeply entrenched in the forefront of research and treatment modalities for vector-borne diseases. \nHer dedication to evidence-based practice is evident in every slide she presents\, with meticulous referencing to ensure the highest standards of accuracy and credibility. \nIn addition to her medical qualifications\, Dr. Turner is also a functional medicine practitioner\, specializing in vector-borne diseases and mold-related illnesses. \nShe has completed rigorous training\, including the Lyme fundamentals and ILADS physician training\, and recently returned from the prestigious ILADS Germany conference\, where she further honed her skills and knowledge in this field. \nFurthermore\, Dr. Turner is privileged to be part of the Niel Nathan and Jill Christa Mentorship program\, allowing her to continuously refine her approach and stay at the cutting edge of integrative medicine practices. \nDr Erika Drewes \nDr Erika Drewes is a Specialist Family Physician with 20 years of experience in South Africa and the United Kingdom. After qualifying as a medical doctor\, Erika worked in various private and public hospitals in Gauteng\, KZN and the UK. During this time she completed a Masters in Family Medicine (UKZN)\, Diploma in Obstetrics (Colleges of Medicine South Africa). \nErika’s interests include women’s health and hormonal balance\, connective tissue health and rehabilitation\, Gut health\, Mold illness\, Auto-immune disease\, Chronic fatigue and Tick Borne infections. \nErika is an active member of the South African Association of Integrative Medicine (SASIM)\, American College for the Advancement of Medicine (ACAM) and the International Lyme’s and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS). \nDr Adele Pelteret \nWhen her first daughter was born with various allergies and health issues. After several years of relying on allopathic medicine\, she realised that it was not helping to address her core health issues and the cause(s) of her ill health. This led to her research into alternative\, complementary\, and integrative approaches\, and investigating natural and nutritional medicine. \nWhen her second daughter was born 3 years later – a tiny 3 weeks prem baby\, with severe lactose intolerance – this finally prompted her to officially study an Australian Diploma in Clinical Nutrition\, and become a Nutrition practitioner in 2005. \nShe worked as a Nutritional Therapist in Pinelands for the following decade. However\, as Nutritional Therapists are not recognised in South Africa\, and due to her yearning for clinical training\, diagnostic and medical knowledge grew she enrolled for the double BSc degree at the University of the Western Cape’s School of Natural Medicine. \nShe completed both her BSc degrees Summa cum laude and qualified as Naturopathic doctor in 2015.She attends Functional Medicine seminars since they started in South Africa almost 2 decades ago\, and I has trained as a Functional Medicine Lifestyle Therapist (FLT). \nShe has delved into Hulda Clark protocols\, have regular Level 3 First Aid training\, and I enjoys writing articles for various publications and appearing on TV – The Home Channel\, talking at various events and on radio. \nShe is an Allied member of the SA Society for Integrative Medicine (SASIM) and the National Secretary for the SA Naturopathy Association (SANA). \nDr Nicola Buchan \nDr. Nicola Buchan is an integrative and functional medical doctor with a background in conventional medicine\, graduating from the University of Cape Town in 2006. She is passionate about holistic healing\, focusing on root causes of illness by integrating conventional medicine with alternative and complementary modalities. She also has experience as a Level 1 Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) practitioner. \nBookings:\nFee: R200 \nDeposit to SASIM Account number: 1357003986\, Nedbank. \nPlease reference your name and the talk. \nSend proof of payment to elma@integrativemedicine.co.za
