The role of grounding, orienting and resourcing in self-regulation

Presented by Lesley Chorn, counselling psychologist

  • Date: Tuesday, 16 August 2022
  • Time: 19:00 – 21:00

The overwhelmed nervous system is one that is stuck between “The Freeze” and sympathetic activation. A racing mind, inability to relax, to slow down, hypervigilance and insomnia are indicators that a system has not recovered its regulation from the experience of threat.

The pandemic triggered the survival instincts of every single person. It has furthermore through association brought up any deeply held unconscious memories of threat. With trauma, even when the danger is over, the brain thinks it is still happening. Mindfulness is the answer apparently. But how do we do it when we are overwhelmed? This talk will cover the important role of grounding, orienting and resourcing in coming back to the self.

Lesley Chorn is a counselling psychologist practicing in Cape Town. She completed her MS in Education at Johns Hopkins University, before completing her education as counselling psychologist at University of Natal. She has been in private practice for 24 years. Early on, she embarked on training in clinical hypnosis. This was shortly followed by Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), a very effective and renowned method of healing trauma.

In 2013 she embarked on 5 year program becoming trained as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, by Dr Peter Levines’Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute. This knowledge brought a huge understanding of the healing process, having a profound effect on her work as well as her personal life. Finally, she learned Trauma and Tension Releasing Exercises (TRE), which plays a significant role in her work.
