Pain: Is it just a symptom?

Professor Parker will delve into the fundamental concept of pain as a biopsychosocial construct. She will explore how pain is not merely a physical sensation but a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors.

Attendees will gain insights into the mechanisms of pain, its multifaceted nature, and the implications for treatment and management. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance understanding and foster more effective, holistic strategies for addressing pain in clinical practice.

Romy Parker is a Professor in the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Cape Town. She is an experienced physiotherapy clinician specializing in chronic pain management and an active researcher with numerous publications.

Professor Parker has successfully supervised many postgraduate students and is the course convenor of the Postgraduate Diploma in Interdisciplinary Pain Management, the first program of its kind in Africa.

Her research focuses on developing and testing mechanism-based treatments relevant to the South African context. She currently serves on the Council of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP).
